AbstractThe purpose of this manual is to provide guidance in designing and implementing law-related education (LRE) awareness and staff development sessions for the Law Related Education National Training and Dissemination Program. It assists in explaining the rationale and essential characteristics of LRE and guides the user in discussing the benefits of LRE, including its potential for reducing delinquent behavior. The manual contains three sections. The first section defines LRE and explains that the six features required for an effective LRE program are: (1) classroom use of outside resource persons, (2) sufficient quantity and quality of instruction, (3) judicious selection of illustrative case materials, (4) teaching strategies that foster interaction among students, (5) involvement of school administrators, and (6) availability and use by teachers of professional peer support. The second section on planning an LRE awareness program, discusses the need to identify the needs of the audience, set goals for the program, design an agenda, include community resources, and evaluate the session. The third section, on conducting the awareness session, provides guidelines on such matters as arranging the environment, materials displays, gauging the audience, and teaching and discussion about controversial issues, thus making the LRE sessions relevant to all participants. The appendices include materials for producing overhead transparencies, three possible LRE program agendas, planning and evaluation guidelines, three classroom activities, suggestions for handling controversial issues, and an ERIC Digest on LRE.
